ART Exhibition at Tsion Cafe

Marie Hines Cowan (b. 1967 Brooklyn, NY) is a figurative oil painter marrying mythology with colloquial culture. Her work is narrative, life-sized, and representational, thoughunconstrained by realism. Hines Cowan’s work is bold, colorful, and painterly, but alsographic and illustrative.

Hines Cowan received her art degree from FIT studying Fashion Illustration though she was more interested in fine art than commercial art. During those years two events changed her trajectory, the 1900 Vienna exhibition came to New York City and photography began to takeover from fashion illustration. She continued at FIT wildly influenced by the AustrianSecessionists and getting an incredible education in the human figure. After FIT Hines Cowanwent on to study classical literature at NYU.

Hines Cowan has been exhibiting in the US and Europe since 1979 in group and solo exhibits and more recently art fairs. In 2024 she will be exhibiting work at the European Cultural Centre’s Biennial in Vience. Hines Cowan has curated exhibits and was the exhibition chair and the President of the National Association of Women Artists. She has spoken on art on The Artist Forum TV, on various radio programs, at Yale’s  2014 Women in Leadership Conference, and artist talks with the art students  at her local high school. In the fall of 2024, she worked with high school art students during her solo exhibition as part of the symposium, Musing, Metamorphoses and Medea, Hines Cowan created with two other scholars, Claire E. Scott, and Valentina Motta, at New Rochelle’s Museum of Arts and Cultural. Motta and Scott have used Hines Cowan’s work in their recent books on Greek mythology. Hines Cowan’s artwork has also been published in several literary and artjournals.

Hines Cowan’s illustration education has led her to combine the graphic qualities of commercial art with traditional painting. She finds this collision between the flatness of Pop Art and the modeling of atelier painting endlessly fascinating. Recently she has taken her work beyond the flatness of the canvas and has begun creating three- dimensional installations of her paintings as a room-sized graphic novel extending artwork and the sculptural text off the walls.

Lauren Lee’s Trio

With effervescent charm and talent, trailblazing vocalist Lauren Lee is a creative voice worth exploring. Her work as a vocalist and composer is evolutionary and fresh, with a commitment to both honor and expand jazz traditions: a playground for experimentation of textures, colors, and use of the voice in a more 'instrumental' fashion with cinematic, artistic music that is listenable, intricate, and emotional. Lauren has created her own voice in the modern jazz vocal sphere by  infusing post-bop jazz harmony and sensibilities with contemporary classical, Latin, and folk/pop flavors to create something inspired and unique.

"{Lee's music is a} fascinating journey, adult music that makes one sit up and listen.  As much as one would love it, we all have troubles and desires – Lauren Lee approaches life as the opportunity to learn every day, creating music that stands out for its honesty and sonic clarity" - Richard Kamins, Steptempest

Community Dinner: Topic : Eliminating FGM/C and Maternal Mortality

February 6, the next day, is the International Day for Zero Tolerance of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting. This is a problem that exists in our community, especially as "vacation cutting" of young girls. If you are personally affected in some way by this practice, whether as a survivor, someone who escaped it, a mother concerned about her daughters, or have othewise experience with this phenomenon, we invite you to join us for an in depth discussion of the topic. We also may discuss other important female health issues: the increased maternal mortality among Black and Brown people is very concerning. Again, if you have experiences and opinions to share, we would love to hear from you. Come prepared to introduce yourself in a minute or two. Feel free to bring a friend, but please sign up everyone under their own name and email address.

The name Sandcatchers – “catching sand” - references something of an impossibility. “I like the idea that this band is always searching, never satisfied. The quartet – experimental guitarist, oud player and composer Yoshie Fruchter (John Zorn’s Tzadik records), Michael Bates, an accomplished jazz bassist with a punk rock background, Myk Freedman, a pioneer of modern lap steel music, and Israeli drummer/percussionist Shai Wetzer – explores the unprecedented combination of the oud, an instrument with centuries of history beginning in pre-Islamic Persia and Turkey, and the lap steel, a more recent invention with roots in the American South. Together with guest cellist Erik Friedlander, these musicians bring their varying backgrounds, specialties, and improvisational voices together to

Looking is Listening

Harlem-based artists Dmitry Kiper and Andrea Timpone would like to invite you to the opening reception of Looking Is Listening, a visual exploration of composition and sound. Looking Is Listening is an exhibition of individual artworks by Dmitry Kiper and Andrea Timpone, as well as several collaborations. Working together as a duo, the artists created a series of meditative compositions through a juxtaposition of realistic pencil drawings and Surreal/Expressionist painting styles.

Visual art like drawing and painting is a medium of space. Yet by bringing in references to music, a medium of time, Dmitry and Andrea bring a fourth dimension to their joint creations. Space and time, looking and listening — in this exhibition they are intricately intertwined.

Dmitry Kiper has been making art for over three decades. He has lived in Harlem for 16 years. His primary interest lies in the interconnections between different art forms, such as painting, music, poetry, and film -- as well as psychology, neuroscience and astrophysics. Whether creating visual art or making music, Dmitry prioritizes the process. The foundation of his creative process lies in the multitude of interconnections between improvisation, mindfulness, and meditation. Dmitry is honored to be showing with his longtime friend Andrea Timpone.

The artists would like to thank Tsion Cafe for hosting this opening reception. Tsion Cafe is located in the historic Sugar Hill neighborhood, in Harlem.

Looking Is Listening

Saturday, June 18

Opening Reception

Tsion Cafe

6:00-9:30pm

Andrea Timpone moved to Harlem out of a deep appreciation for its history, culture, and influential figures, such as Big L, Immortal Technique, and Malcolm X. When Andrea began practicing her hyper-realist drawing techniques, she found the process served as a deep source of meditation. More recently, she has experimented with combining realistic forms of expression in pencil with colorful abstract elements. Andrea often presents her artwork under the name La Matita, which means “the pencil” in Italian. Her love of music has been a consistent inspiration through various turns in her creative process. Andrea is honored to be showing with her longtime friend Dmitry Kiper.

Looking Is Listening, in keeping with the theme of the exhibition, will feature two wonderful musicians:

6-7pm: Morgan Horowitz on sitar

7-9:30pm Rob Mastrianni on guitar
