Looking is Listening

Harlem-based artists Dmitry Kiper and Andrea Timpone would like to invite you to the opening reception of Looking Is Listening, a visual exploration of composition and sound. Looking Is Listening is an exhibition of individual artworks by Dmitry Kiper and Andrea Timpone, as well as several collaborations. Working together as a duo, the artists created a series of meditative compositions through a juxtaposition of realistic pencil drawings and Surreal/Expressionist painting styles.

Visual art like drawing and painting is a medium of space. Yet by bringing in references to music, a medium of time, Dmitry and Andrea bring a fourth dimension to their joint creations. Space and time, looking and listening — in this exhibition they are intricately intertwined.

Dmitry Kiper has been making art for over three decades. He has lived in Harlem for 16 years. His primary interest lies in the interconnections between different art forms, such as painting, music, poetry, and film -- as well as psychology, neuroscience and astrophysics. Whether creating visual art or making music, Dmitry prioritizes the process. The foundation of his creative process lies in the multitude of interconnections between improvisation, mindfulness, and meditation. Dmitry is honored to be showing with his longtime friend Andrea Timpone.

The artists would like to thank Tsion Cafe for hosting this opening reception. Tsion Cafe is located in the historic Sugar Hill neighborhood, in Harlem.

Opening Reception

6:00-9:30pm

Andrea Timpone moved to Harlem out of a deep appreciation for its history, culture, and influential figures, such as Big L, Immortal Technique, and Malcolm X. When Andrea began practicing her hyper-realist drawing techniques, she found the process served as a deep source of meditation. More recently, she has experimented with combining realistic forms of expression in pencil with colorful abstract elements. Andrea often presents her artwork under the name La Matita, which means “the pencil” in Italian. Her love of music has been a consistent inspiration through various turns in her creative process. Andrea is honored to be showing with her longtime friend Dmitry Kiper.

Looking Is Listening, in keeping with the theme of the exhibition, will feature two wonderful musicians:

6-7pm: Morgan Horowitz on sitar

7-9:30pm Rob Mastrianni on guitar
